The entire Ruhr region is famous for their affection towards football. Some say that football is the people’s religion here. The same accounts for Bochum fans who are absolutely proud of their team although it’s been a while that they played in league one. Although, these times the stadium hardly ever is completely full, the fans are very loyal and cheerful. To support the home team make sure you are wearing blue or white, the team’s colors. Be there half an hour before the game when the entire stadium sings the club anthem.

Bochum have long been overshadowed by their neighbours – Borussia Dortmund, and whilst Bochum aren’t going to be competing in Europe or even the Bundesliga 1 anytime soon – there is still a feel good, family atmosphere around the place. The fans are really welcoming, especially to foreign visitors – pleased that they made the journey from Dortmund to spend their day watching this smaller team!

VfL Bochum are known for a rubbish team and an unwavering support. The stadium holds just under 30,000 fans and you can expect that to be filled for every game, regardless of where the team are in the league. The standing terrace is where you’ll find the ultras, who pride themselves on acting as if there wasn’t a game on at all. They sing through everything.

Bochum have a huge amount of local rivals, with 12 teams in the top three divisions within 100km. Against any of these teams there is a potential for trouble and the police will be out in force around the away sector. For most visitors though, the rivalries only add to the experience and present no real danger.
