Sometimes if you’re going to make the most of it, a trip to the football needs to be balanced with something unique; something unexpected. For me, and a first visit to Turf Moor, this has to be the Singing Ringing Tree of Burnley. It’s a beautifully constructed mass of steel pipes which form the shape of a tree blowing in the wind. Remarkably, it harnesses the wind flowing through it to act like a self-controlled wind instrument. It’s absolutely worth the visit, though more easily reached by car as it’s a few miles away.

On Thursdays and non-match Saturdays – you should really consider heading to Turf Moor and getting a behind the scenes look at the stadium. Tours take you into the directors box, under the stands themselves, into the changing rooms and just like the players – down the tunnel onto the pitch! For £10 a ticket for adults and £5 for kids you really can’t go wrong.
In the surrounding area Moorhouse Brewery is worth a trip – if only for the delicious beer, and how about a little history at Towneley Hall!
