Dortmund fans have a specific routine before every home game. 5 hours before the game starts, everybody meets at the ‘Alter Markt’ to have their first beers and a traditional ‘Currywurst’ (sausage with curry sauce). 2,5 hours before, you will be making your way to the ‘Kreuzviertel’. Join in on some of the enthusiastic fans singing along. Then, 1,5 hours before the game follow the crowd to the stadium, still singing – never be without a beer! It’s all about having a good time.

It goes without saying, but games with deadly rivals Schalke and Bayern can be heated affairs, so keep an eye on the away sector if you are near there. Trouble is always possible, though there will be a massive police presence to maintain order. Leave plenty of time to get to and from the Signal Iduna Park, as with such huge attendances, there can be congestion. Instead, get there early to soak in the atmosphere and plan for a few beers afterwards to let the crowd subside.

The stadium operates a no cash policy in the and unless you are having a sit-down meal in the on-site restaurants. They prefer to use the ‘Stadiondeckel Chip Card’. You can buy these cards from one of the 150 stands outside the ground and inside. Important to remember, otherwise getting a beer may prove difficult! You do have to put a minimum of €10 – which includes a €2 deposit on it, but don’t feel like you have to spend it all. Any leftover credit can be refunded!
