If you want a beer or two with the Hamburg SV faithful, you could do a lot worse then head to the ‘Gerhardstrasse’. This long street has come to be known as the HSV Party Mile, with a line of football friendly pubs welcoming in fans before and after the game. Arrive early, or after the game and have a mini Hamburg SV themed pub crawl.

With the stadium being a bit far out of town, there is a small set up opposite the Stellingen Train Station, with Shuttleimbiss serving beerfrom inside the small bar and within the attached marquee. There is also the nearby Unabsteig, that has a big TV screen for the prematch build up.

There’s really only two options that you need to know for the Imtech Arena: Tankstop and Unabsteigbar. They’re conveniently both by Stellingen S-Bahn station and – a product of being the only two bars worth talking about – they’re often rammed on match days. Unabsteigbar take their name from the German for “unrelegateable”, a reference to Hamburg never having been out of the Bundesliga, and they’re a fan classic. Tankstop are little more than an outside catering service, but they’ll fill you up before the stadium and their – ahem – rustic surrounds are charming enough.

Right next to the Volksparkstadion you will find the so-called fan pub “Die Raute”, a great place to go before a home game of the Hamburger SV. It is a place where a lot of fans and groups meet before watching the match. You can also go for the big lunch buffet while enjoying a couple of beers. Another option is “Stadion Eck”. A bit further away, but also a great opportunity to meet local fans and have a beer or two before the game. There is also a pub right at the S3 metro station which is dominated by home fans and locals, hard to get a free spot here on match day.

After the game I recommend you to go to St. Pauli, the place where the party is at. A great quarter in Hamburg which is only about 2.5km from the stadium. Numerous bars, pubs and the popular and “historical” red light district are waiting for you. Even if you’re just strolling along, a visit is definitely worth it.
