What to expect from the Fritz Walter Stadion crowd?

The so-called “Betzenberg” is somewhat of a holy institution in German football. Unfortunately, it seems like the golden times of 1. FC Kaiserslautern are over as the club itself was a top-tier team in the 90s. Meanwhile, they’re a decent team in the second league, nothing more or less. The magic though still seems to be around, older generations will think back to unbelievable times of success and enthusiasm. In general, the fans are still very passionate and cheerful, but support has definitely decreased over the last ten years. A full stadium has become an exception.

Kaiserslautern may play in the Bundesliga 2 but from the atmosphere at the games you would think they were competing in the Champions League. It might not be the biggest of towns but the fans take their football very seriously! There is often such a fervour at the game that plenty of fans come away loving the ‘bonkers’ experience!

Noise, noise and more noise. Kaiserslautern haven’t been any good for years but they still pack in the crowds and that is due in no small part to the fantastic atmosphere generated by the Betzenberg, the huge terrace. There are fanclubs on the Westkurve that date back to 1969 and are still going. A lot of clubs will give it the come-rain-or-shine schtick but Kaiserslautern really walk the walk, mostly because it’s been torrential of late and their average attendance is still huge.
