Mainz are one of the many teams that operate a cashless system inside the stadium. If you want to buy any drinks or refreshments, you will have to obtain a cashless card from the ticket box or stands around the stadium – before topping it up with at least €10. Although this is a pain, it does reduce queues at the kiosks with no one fumbling around with loose change! You can of course refund the money on the card at several machines around the stadium.

Arguably the best place to see the game at the Opel Arena is the “Supportbereich”, the supporters’ area. This is the long area along the Gegengerade side, where both standing and sitting are possible. The idea is that fans can have an assigned seat, as opposed to the standing terrace, but still feel free to safely stand and to support the team as loudly as possible. It’s €20, a little dearer than the average standing area, but more than worth it.

Mainz is sometimes called the German carnival capital. During November until March there are always carnival activities going on. Especially, during one week in February or March (depends on the German holidays) the entire town will go crazy! If you can, you should make sure to combine a football game with this popular event. An unforgettable experience!
