When you are on the road – some decent Mexican food is hard to come by. Luckily Mainz has El Burro! Cooking a whole host of classics such as Nachos, Burritos, Tacos and more – it’s a make your own kinda place set up in the vein of a Chipotle.

If you have a craving for some seafood, then definitely try UDP. A Portuguese place, it serves up some wonderfully flavourful dishes – it is a favourite haunt of many Portuguese expats which shows that the food must be good!

If you have eaten too much meat in Germany (a real possibility) you should head to Schrebergarten. It’s a vegetarian place that has some of the freshest food in the city. Perfect for a mini-detox!

I can highly recommend “Bobby’s Restaurant” if you’re looking for a decent snack before or after a match. It is about 1km from the stadium and, thus, one of the few places within walking distance. Definitely try out their Thai Food!

There’s a Kebab shop about 800m from the stadium called “DeDe’s Campus Döner”. Good food, right next to the university.

If you’re looking for a nice place to have dinner after a stressful game, you might want to check out the Greek place “Plaka”. The ambiance might be a bit old-fashioned, but the food has always been great since I first went there.

The stadium really is in the middle of nowhere – all you can see is fields from the top of the Gegengerade – so don’t go expecting to pick up a feed when you’re at the ground unless you fork out for hospitality seats. There’s a fair few bratwurst stands, of course, and perhaps a bretzel or two, but if you want something more substantial then eat before or after the game in the centre of Mainz to avoid disappointment.
