What to expect from the Melbourne Cricket Ground crowd?
1 answer
With so many different sports and teams playing at the MCG, the crowds will vary greatly. One thing you are guaranteed though is a well-educated and knowledgeable crowd. During AFL matches, the cheer squads, which sit behind the goals, lead the main chants and support throughout the game. If Collingwood happen to win at the MCG, look for ‘Joffer’ and his gold jacket!
During the Big Bash (Cricket), dancers, fireworks, and all sorts of other off-field entertainment have also been added to enhance the fan experience.

AFL crowds are among the most passionate in sports. There is no better experience than seeing a big game at the MCG between 2 traditional Melbourne clubs. Carlton vs. Collingwood games generally attract 70,000 people- and this is for regular season games! You can expect a loud, opinionated and very passionate crowd. No favours are given to opposition fans, but it’s generally all in good spirits.
Cricket games are a lot more low key, but you can still find the rowdy parts of the crowd in certain sections. The old ‘Bay 13’ (in the Great Southern Stand behind slips for a Right Hander), is starting to blur the lines between harmless fun and bonehead stupidity, but remains the hotspot for those looking for a rowdy experience.

I think the first two answers cover it pretty well, but a passionate and knowledgeable crowd is generally what you’ll get for whatever sport you’re watching.
