What to expect from the Red Bull Arena crowd?

One first thing: Wherever Leipzig plays, the club is faced with envy and hate. Football fans from other club don’t seem to like the fact that Red Bull is investing huge amounts of money to build up a strong and successful team. This is why away games for RB Leipzig fans are actually pretty dangerous. On the other hand, the club is very young, thus, doesn’t have any “dangerous” and violent fans itself. The atmosphere is always very friendly and super enthusiastic as there’s also a lot of families and kids visiting the games. Last time I went I witnessed a great game, very supportive fans and an overall super friendly atmosphere. People in Leipzig are probably also very thankful that they can finally witness some first Bundesliga action again.

The atmosphere at RB Leipzig is a very strange one. Home fans are overjoyed at their club’s meteoric rise to stardom. In just over 10 years the club has been created and is now challenging the likes of Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga. This has created sell-out crowds that really amps up the volume, however because the club is the opposite of what most German clubs stand for – tradition and fan power – it has gotten a lot of negative feeling from other sets of fans. Either the away section is rather empty with boycotting fans or it is a rather hostile one!

This really depends on whether you’re in the home sections or the away end. The home end will be vanilla, with no aggression and generic singing. If you’re after the classic German football experience, this is as far as you can get from it really. In the away section, however, you’ll be met with either complete nothingness – plenty of supporters refuse to accept the legitimacy of RB as a club and thus boycott – or at the other end of the spectrum, visceral hatred. Either way expect a big police presence.
