Oakwell Stadium, Grove St, Barnsley S71 1ET, United
The front section of Oakwell looks like a bizarre combination of an old church and a sports apparel superstore, you could say. Inside, however, it looks like a mini Old Trafford- it’s gorgeous! A couple of the stands look a little dated (the roofs, mainly) but the vibrant red seating and bright green turf offset that from an aesthetics point of view. It seats an impressive 23,000 fans if the occasion merits it, and was mostly revamped during the late 90s, so everything is in good repair! Great place to enjoy an afternoon’s footie.
Having played in Oakwell stadium since 1887, Barnsley FC are a grand old northern club – with proper northern hospitality. When every game could be the difference between life or death in the Championship the atmosphere is sure to be electric. A ten minute walk uphill from the station gets you to the ground – and with ample eating and drinking opportunities in Barnsley itself – you’re in for a grand day out.
